Kedar Gokhale, Swiggy’s former vice president of operations, has launched Orbit Farming, a new venture in the agritech sector. Gokhale, together with Aishwarya Ramakrishnan, who previously led strategy, growth, and operations at Krish-e, intends to transform Indian farming techniques.
Orbit Farming addresses mid-sized Indian farmers with 2 to 10 hectares of farmland, providing innovative solutions to boost production and profitability. Gokhale highlighted his excitement for this change, saying, “After an exciting 6-year stint with Swiggy, I am returning to an industry that has always captivated me: agriculture! Happy to collaborate with Aishwarya Ramakrishnan on this adventure as we develop an idea and start Orbit Farming.”
According to its LinkedIn page, the startup’s mission is to narrow the gap between conventional methods of farming and modern, technology-driven solutions. Orbit Farming aims to empower mid-sized farms to increase yields and income via the use of mechanization and other sophisticated techniques.
Gokhale has extensive expertise from his time at Swiggy, where he was crucial in handling hiring, retention, participation, and fleet adequacy for Swiggy Food and Instamart at the localized level. Before joining Swiggy, Gokhale launched Truce-True Price, an AgriTech firm, in 2015.
The couple is currently recruiting to form a founding team dedicated to boosting mid-sized farms. Orbit Farming’s aim is consistent with an increasing trend among Indian CEOs moving into entrepreneurship. Gautam Sinha, former CEO of Times Internet, just founded SimpleO.ai, an artificial intelligence startup, and Karthik Gurumurthy, the brains powering Swiggy Instamart, has acquired finance for his offline retail company, Convenio.
Orbit Farming is a key step in meeting the demands of Indian agriculture through technology and innovation. As the AgriTech sector grows, projects such as Orbit Farming have the potential to significantly alter farmers’ lives and the agricultural environment as a whole. With Gokhale and Ramakrishnan at the leadership, Orbit Farming’s future seems hopeful as it tries to usher in a new era of agricultural excellence in India.
